Hauptbeschreibung

While still a priest, Augustine dictated his elucidations on the first 32 psalms (edited in CSEL 93/1A). After becoming a bishop, he expounded on some of these to his congregations in Hippo Regius and Carthage. This volume provides a critical edition of the sermons dealing with the psalms 18, 21, 25, 26 and 29 to 32. The sermon on psalm 25 (= Sermo 166A) was not originally meant for the corpus of the Enarrationes, but since it is found in the Enarrationes in Psalmos manuscripts, it has been included in the present edition. The sermons were delivered orally, and thus were recorded by stenographers and collected in Augustine's library for publication, from whence they were disseminated. The oldest surviving manuscripts date to the 6th century (paris, bN Latin 9533) and the Carolingian period. There are a large number of extant manuscripts, which attests to the popularity of psalm commentaries in the Middle Ages. For this reason, manuscripts that were copied before 1100 have been chiefly used for this edition: It is based on about 40 text witnesses, including fragments. These are described in the preface. Common errors allow a classification of the manuscripts into three sub-archetypes. Due to frequent contaminations, establishing a stemma proved impossible. Textual variants and a list of available manuscripts are recorded in a critical apparatus and an apparatus testium, respectively.
